Location search: privacy and terms

What happens to what you type in the location field, and the terms that apply to address suggestions.

Last updated: 6 October 2026.

What this page covers

This page covers the location field on Routes to Care pages, where you can enter an address or a postal code, and the “Use my location” button. It does not cover other parts of the website.

Postal codes

On the Community Health Centre map page and in the Community Health Centres section of Find Care & Support, a complete postal code (like A1A 1A1) is checked on your device against our own list. It is not sent to Google or to any other search service.

On the General Directory and the other sections of Find Care & Support, a complete postal code you type is placed on your device from our own data when the field shows “Address suggestions powered by Google”; otherwise it is looked up with OpenStreetMap (see below). If you enter only its first three characters, the area is always found on your device.

Address suggestions from Google

On the Community Health Centre map page and in the Community Health Centres section of Find Care & Support, address suggestions are provided by Google Maps. On the General Directory and the other sections, they are provided by Google Maps when the field shows “Address suggestions powered by Google”. When you type an address there, what you type is sent to Google to suggest matching addresses. Google’s code is loaded only when you start typing an address.

When you choose a suggestion, the page asks Google for the parts of that address: for example the street number and name, city, province, postal code and country. We use only the postal code. On the Community Health Centre map page and in the Community Health Centres section, it finds centres in our own list. Where services are listed by distance, we place that postal code with our own data (an estimated location for the postal code, or its general area), never the address itself, so distances are approximate.

We do not ask Google where the address is on a map, we do not send the address to any other service, and an address you choose from the suggestions is not added to the page address.

Your browser sends these requests to Google directly, with the information any web request carries, such as your IP address. Google describes how it handles that information in its privacy policy: Google Privacy Policy

Searches sent to OpenStreetMap

When a location field does not show “Address suggestions powered by Google”, addresses, intersections and place names you type there are sent to Nominatim, the search service of the OpenStreetMap Foundation; on the General Directory and the other sections of Find Care & Support, so are complete postal codes. Searches reopened from a shared page address are sent to Nominatim too, except a postal code where the field shows Google. OpenStreetMap Foundation Privacy Policy

“Use my location”

If you press “Use my location” and allow it, your browser gives the page your device’s location. It is used on your device to order services by distance and to check the mapped areas. It is not sent to Google, to Nominatim or to us.

What this website saves

The location field does not save what you type or choose, in your browser or anywhere else. Your browser remembers only the language you chose. A search can still appear in a page address, as described next.

Searches in page addresses you can share

On the General Directory and the other sections of Find Care & Support, a search you type, such as a postal code, is added to the page address, so the results can be bookmarked or shared. That address stays in your browser history and in any link you share, and it is sent to our web host whenever the page is loaded. An address chosen from Google’s suggestions, and your device’s location, are not added.

What our hosting and analytics services receive

Our web host, Netlify, receives what is needed to deliver each page and file, such as your IP address, your browser type and the address of the page or file, including any search that is part of that address. When a postal code is checked, or used to list services by distance, the file your browser downloads is named after its first two characters.

Our pages also load Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page visits. It receives information such as the address of the page you visit and details of your browser.

These services keep this information under their own policies. Google and the OpenStreetMap Foundation receive what you type in the location field as described above.

Terms for address suggestions

This website includes Google Maps features and content: the address suggestions in its location fields. Your use of Google Maps features and content is subject to the then-current versions of the Google Maps End User Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy.

Address suggestions and our results help you find centres to contact. They do not decide whether a centre will serve you. Contact the centre to confirm.
