Location search: privacy and terms

What happens to what you type in the location field, and the terms that apply to address suggestions.

Last updated: 6 October 2026.

What this page covers

This page covers the location field on the Map, the General Directory and Find Care & Support, and the “Use my location” button.

Postal codes

A complete postal code (like A1A 1A1) is checked on your device against our own data. The exception: on the General Directory and the other sections of Find Care & Support, when the field does not show “Address suggestions powered by Google”, it is looked up with OpenStreetMap. The first three characters alone are always checked on your device.

Address suggestions from Google

When the field shows “Address suggestions powered by Google”, what you type is sent to Google to suggest matching addresses and places, directly from your browser, with the information any web request carries, such as your IP address. When you choose a suggestion, we check its type of place, country and province to confirm it is a specific address or place in Ontario, and we use its postal code: to find centres in our own list, and to list services by approximate distance using our own data. We do not ask Google where the address or place is, and we do not send it to any other service.

Searches sent to OpenStreetMap

When the field does not show “Address suggestions powered by Google”, addresses, intersections and place names you type are sent to Nominatim, the search service of the OpenStreetMap Foundation, as are complete postal codes on the pages named above. A shared page address that holds an address or a place is also looked up there. OpenStreetMap Foundation Privacy Policy

“Use my location”

If you allow it, your device’s location is used on your device to order services by distance and to check the mapped areas. It is not sent to Google, to OpenStreetMap or to us.

What this website saves

The location field does not save what you type or choose, in your browser or anywhere else. Your browser remembers only the language you chose.

Searches in page addresses you can share

On the General Directory and the other sections of Find Care & Support, a search you type, such as a postal code, is added to the page address so you can share the results. It then stays in your browser history and in any link you share, and is sent to our web host when the page loads. An address chosen from Google’s suggestions and your device’s location are not added.

What our hosting and analytics services receive

Our web host, Netlify, receives what is needed to deliver each page and file, such as your IP address, your browser type and the page address, including any search in it. When a postal code is used, the data file your browser downloads is named after its first two characters. Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page visits and receives the page address and details of your browser. These services keep this information under their own policies.

Terms for address suggestions

This website includes Google Maps features and content: the address and place suggestions in its location fields. Your use of Google Maps features and content is subject to the then-current versions of the Google Maps End User Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy.

Address suggestions and our results help you find centres to contact. They do not decide whether a centre will serve you. Contact the centre to confirm.
